“Daed, I need to go to the library.”

Sara was insistent. She missed their Hope and Samuel agreed to indulge his daughter.

“Give me an hour today please.”

“Why so long? Are you up to something?”

Sara shook her head. She was up to something, but she wasn’t quite sure what it was. Not yet anyway.

“Okay, I’ll see you later. I have to see Atlee King at the furniture store in any case.”

Sara was glad, that meant Samuel wouldn’t see her go the police station as the King’s store was at the other side of town.

She skipped into the library and asked the librarian how to use the Internet. When she was gone, she typed in Brett Carson’s name. He was a fancy money man. She read more and more. When she had sufficient information, she went to the police station. Her arrival caused quite a stir.

“I’d like to see the Detective who dealt with Rachel Jones. My papa had found her, Samuel Lapp.”

She was very polite, and the desk sergeant looked at her.

“Where is your papa?”

“He has business to attend to but please may I speak to the Detective?”

The desk sergeant smiled at her and told her to sit. A few minutes later, a woman detective came through the door.

“Sara, come with me. What can I help you with?”

She escorted the child to her desk.

“You’re a woman. I’d love to be a detective. I read lots of mysteries.”

“I’m Amy Wells. I used to read a lot of mysteries when I was your age too. What can I help you with, Sara?”

“We found Hope, I mean, Rachel Jones. Could you check that she’s okay? She didn’t remember anything, so I don’t know where she lives, but I’ve written a letter. Could you give it to her please?”

Amy smiled at the sweet child before her. She hadn’t had much interaction with the Amish community since her arrival in town, but they did seem rather charming.

“I will pass it on. But why do you wonder if she’s okay?”

Amy was curious. It seemed an odd way expression but she knew the Amish used Pennsylvania Dutch so perhaps it wasn’t so odd.

“I saw her with the man she is promised to, but it made me uneasy. Have you any leads on who attacked her in the first place?”

“Sara, we’re still investigating. Why don’t you go home, and I promise to get this letter to Miss Jones.”

Amy stood up to Sara walk out.

“I wish I could be like you and solve crime. I knew Hope would be in the newspaper, that’s why I checked it. I stopped checking it because I wanted her to stay.”

“Sara, why do you call her Hope when you know her name now?”

“Hope means she’s still ours.”

Sara’s eyes filled with tears. She wanted Hope to become Amish and marry her father so they could be a family.

“Sara, my dear, it’s okay. How old were you when your mom died?”

Amy gave her a tissue.

“I was four.”

“I was five when my mom died. We’re a lot alike Sara.
